Soda Ash

from $14.00

To appropriately increase your pH, there is nothing better than Sodium Carbonate, a fine powder with a pH around 11.4. Commonly known as Soda Ash in the pool community, this product is often mistaken for alkalinity increaser Sodium Bicarbonate (Bicarb, Baking Soda) and causes confusion on which product to use and when.  Ironically, Soda Ash will increase your alkalinity, just as not as effectively as Sodium Bicarbonate.  Vice versa, Bicarb will not raise pH as effectively as Soda Ash.  Use this knowledge when adjusting your chemicals and monitor both levels (pH, alkalinity) when administering Soda Ash.

  • To prevent cloudy water, use a maximum of 2 pounds for every 10,000 gallons of water for each cycle.
    • Most in-ground pools are above or around 20,000 gallons, so you should not add more than 4 pounds a cycle.
    • A cycle is referring to how long it takes for all the water in your pool to run through your filter. There are a lot of variables (length of piping used, motor HP, inclines, etc), but a typical residential pool with a working motor will cycle its water twice over in 10-14 hours. Again, there are a lot of variables, and it is not rare to be outside of this range of time.
  • Soda Ash will raise your alkalinity, but it is less effective than Sodium Bicarbonate.
  • Sodium Bicarbonate (baking soda) can be used to raise pH, but it is not as effective as Soda Ash. Sodium Bicarbonate is better used to raise alkalinity.
